The most alive place on earth is beneath your feet.

The green economy is everything built around the living world that makes it stronger while making communities richer. Regenerative farming that builds soil while growing food. Forests protected and restored for carbon, water and biodiversity. Renewable energy from sun, wind and water. Green cities with clean air, urban gardens and living buildings. Biodiversity protected, pollinators, ecosystems, species. Indigenous land knowledge combined with modern science. Communities that thrive because the land around them thrives. It is our shared responsibility to take care of the earth. And the earth takes care of everything else.

The forest knows things we are still learning. Beneath every forest floor runs an extraordinary network of mycorrhizal fungi connecting trees across vast distances. Through this network trees share nutrients, water and chemical signals. Mother trees recognise their own seedlings and sends them extra carbon through the fungal web. A tree under attack from insects sends warning signals to its neighbours, who respond by producing defensive compounds before the threat arrives. The forest is one living communicating organism that has been running perfectly for millions of years. A single large tree releases up to 400 litres of water vapour into the atmosphere every day through transpiration. Multiplied across an entire forest this becomes weather. The Amazon rainforest generates up to 50% of its own rainfall this way, a forest so alive it creates the rain that feeds itself. Forests are home to 80% of all land based species on earth. One hectare stores up to 400 tonnes of carbon. The green economy understands what the forest has always known. Protect it. Work with it. Learn from it. And it gives back more than any generation has ever imagined.

The most biodiverse places on earth are also the most extraordinary economic opportunity. Imagine drawing a line around less than 10% of the earth's surface. Inside that line lives more than 70% of every species on earth. Every bird. Every mammal. Every reptile. Every plant. Every insect. Every organism science has named, and the millions it has yet to discover. These are the 17 megadiverse countries. The living treasury of the planet. Brazil contains 10% of all species on earth. Colombia has more bird species than any other country on the planet. Madagascar evolved in such extraordinary isolation that 90% of its wildlife exists nowhere else on earth. Indonesia shelters the most diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems simultaneously. Together these 17 countries hold the majority of the world's tropical forests, the highest concentration of endemic species and the deepest reservoirs of traditional ecological knowledge accumulated over thousands of years of living inside extraordinary natural richness. The green economy was built for these places. To protect what took millions of years of evolution to create. To learn from the communities who have tended this richness for generations. And to prove, beyond any doubt, that the most biodiverse places on earth can also be the most prosperous. That protecting life and building thriving economies are the same thing. Always were. Always will be. The most biodiverse places on earth are also the most extraordinary places to build a future.

The green economy is built on the most generous gifts on earth. Bees pollinate 75% of the world's flowering plants. One third of every bite of food eaten anywhere on earth arrived because a bee showed up. Quietly. Without being asked. Without expecting anything in return. The sun has been sending free energy to earth for 4.6 billion years. Solar panels harvest it. Wind turbines capture the atmospheric movement it creates. Hydroelectric systems use the water cycle it drives. Geothermal energy taps the heat generated deep in the earth. Every renewable energy source is nature working, the way it has always worked. Silently. Generously. Without interruption. The green economy recognises what nature has always provided. It builds food systems that protect the pollinators keeping them alive. Energy systems that harvest what the sun, wind and water have always offered. Agricultural practices that work with the living world. Communities that thrive because the ecosystems around them thrive. Nature has been running the most generous system on earth since the beginning. The green economy is humanity building something worthy of everything it provides. Take care of nature. Nature takes care of everything else.

One Handful. Billions Of Lives. The most biodiverse habitat on earth is beneath your feet. One teaspoon of healthy soil contains more living organisms than there are people on earth. Billions of bacteria. Millions of fungi. Protozoa, nematodes, earthworms and organisms science is still discovering. All of them working together in a living system of extraordinary complexity, breaking down organic matter, releasing nutrients, filtering water, storing carbon, building the foundation that grows every crop, every fruit, every vegetable and every grain produced on land. Soil stores more carbon than all the world's vegetation combined. It filters and stores water in quantities that make it one of the most powerful natural systems on earth. And it takes between 500 and 1,000 years to form just 1cm of it naturally. The green economy starts here. In the ground. In the living world beneath our feet. Soil is the most precious substance on earth. And the green economy is built on protecting it, restoring it and working with it the way nature always intended. Tend the soil. Everything else follows.
